On this day in 1941, Tommy Barnes won the inaugural Dogwood Invitational. Barnes was one of Georgia’s most awarded players in the state. He was captain of the Georgia Tech golf teams in 1937 and 1938. In 1941, he won the Georgia Amateur title. He claimed titles at the Southeastern Open and the Southern Amateur twice. In 1950, he played in the Masters Tournament. The GSGA’s overall player of the year trophy is named in memory of Barnes and his impact on the state. He was inducted into the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame in 1989
