On this day in 1916, Alexa Stirling Fraser claimed her first of three consecutive U.S. Women’s Amateur Championships. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Stirling honed her skills under the guidance of Stewart Maiden, the head professional at the Atlanta Athletic Club’s East Lake Golf Club. Her talent was evident early on when she emerged as the low qualifier in the Women’s Southern Golf Association.
After securing her first U.S. Women’s Amateur title in 1916, Stirling joined forces with fellow Georgia Golf Hall of Fame members Bobby Jones and Perry Adair to raise funds for the Red Cross in support of the World War I effort. When the war ended, Stirling successfully defended her title, winning the U.S. Women’s Amateur again in 1919 and 1920, becoming one of only five players to win the championship three consecutive times.
Later in life, She shifted to a career in banking and relocated to Canada, though she never lost her passion for golf. She went on to win the Canadian Women’s Amateur twice and was inducted into the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame in 1989
